Cadet's Log - Stardate 2019.94 - Introduction

This is my second SmithsonianEx course on Edx and I look forward to another deep dive into an area of pop culture that I love.

Like many of my classmates, I was pulled in to Star Trek via TNG. I remember my core group of friends at that time refusing to do anything other than watch the new episode each week; we foreswore any other social outing and gathered together at one of our houses to see what new, glorious adventures the stars would bring. From there, I was hooked: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, and now Discovery; I watched them and loved each, warts and all.

I think what draws me to the shows is the mirror it holds (or tries to) up to society. Star Trek has, for the most part, forced us to look at ourselves and evaluate what it means to be human; what it means to be a citizen of a larger world. Underneath all of the special effects and make up is a well-intentioned social commentary.

I look forward to learning and sharing with you all.
